Put the same information on every quote

Match the vehicles, household drivers, address, and vehicle use. Keep the policy period consistent. An estimate based on different information will not show whether a price difference comes from coverage or assumptions.

Check limits and deductibles separately

Liability addresses covered injuries or damage you cause to others. Collision and comprehensive address different types of loss to your vehicle. Compare each limit and deductible; a higher deductible may reduce a premium but leaves more of a covered loss for you to pay.

A side-by-side quote checklist

  • Bodily injury and property damage liability limits.
  • Collision and comprehensive deductibles.
  • Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, where available.
  • Optional benefits, exclusions, and discount conditions.
  • The total premium, installment fees, and policy term.

Confirm the handoff before cancelling

Ask when the new policy becomes effective and when you will receive proof of insurance. Check lender or lease requirements. Coordinate cancellation with the old insurer after confirming the new coverage, rather than assuming a quote puts protection in place.
